May 21, 2021: Letter from Council President Benjamin Hover

National Police Appreciation

Dear Lansdowne Neighbors,

Welcome to Summer! The beautiful sunshine and the many beautiful flowers help to remind us about the joy of our neighborhoods in Lansdowne.

First of all, I want to thank all of the voters who came out on Primary day to make your voices heard. And, to the superheroes of democracy who work the long hours to ensure that we have fair and free elections in Lansdowne, thank you to all of the poll workers for making democracy happen!

Economic Development

Lansdowne Borough Council continues to move forward with the development of projects to improve the amenities for Lansdowne Borough residents through strategic investments in the parks and in the walkability of our downtown. Lansdowne Borough Council voted to award a contract with the NV5 Engineering to redevelop and upgrade the Veteran’s Park and The Landing area. The design will develop ideas to upgrade our Veteran’s Memorial for the first time in decades and also to build on the pilot program of the Lansdowne Landing into the next stage of a thriving downtown community gathering space and upgrade our parking lots.

Much progress has been made on the Lansdowne Avenue Crosswalk and Gateway Slope is currently under construction. Likewise, the survey for the Transportation Community Development Initiative is underway.

Banners

At the Council meeting on May 19th, Lansdowne Borough Council voted for the purchase of banners for Lansdowne for our entryways and our downtown. Please see the banners Council voted to approve HERE. Thank you to Hoff Communications for donating the services for several of the banners.

Similarly, Lansdowne Borough Council is supporting the  American Legion in their participation in the Hometown Heroes Program to buy banners to highlight the heroes highlighted on the Memorial in our downtown.

Bike Facilities

Lansdowne Borough Council continues to work with Upper Darby, Yeadon, and East Lansdowne to develop the Eastern Delaware County Bikeway. Bicycle facilities help to promote public health and create non-motorized connections between people and trails, parks, schools, transit sites, and other key areas. On May 25th, Lansdowne Borough will be hosting a public meeting to provide more information on this important project. In conjunction with the Bike Facilities being developed by Pennoni Engineers, the plan demonstrates Lansdowne’s leadership to create the 21st Century infrastructure to allow for transit oriented development.

With the  completion of these projects and the booming real estate market, new people, new initiatives and new development is occurring in Lansdowne Borough The real estate market remains brisk and folks throughout the region are realizing this gem of a town, Lansdowne, and we welcome our new neighbors into this green place to grow.

Public Health and Safety:

Also, at the May 19th meeting, Lansdowne  Borough Council discussed the issues and concerns around reopening Lansdowne Borough facilities. We have all heard the expectation that the President has set surrounding the lifting of masks. I want to take a moment to caution our neighbors that there are many folks who have not been vaccinated and there are vulnerable groups right now: our kids and folks with health conditions who are unable to get vaccinated. Please be considerate and maintain health precautions to ensure that COVID does not gain ground again.

With this in mind, Lansdowne Borough Council voted on a graduated series of openings. Please look for the announcements of these openings.

National Police AppreciationLast week was National Police Appreciation Week. To our officers in the department, we appreciate you. Last week, Mayor Campuzano and Vice President, Magda Byrne, presented lunch to the officers of the Lansdowne Police Department on behalf of Lansdowne Borough Council.

Finally, Lansdowne Borough Council would like to invite the entire community to several events coming up in Lansdowne. In June, Lansdowne will be celebrating the LGBTQIA community through a flag-raising for Pride month and on May 19th, Lansdowne Borough Council passed the Pride Resolution to honor the work of past activists and to honor the members in our community.

Also, Lansdowne Borough passed on May 19th a resolution to celebrate Juneteenth. For the second year in the row, Lansdowne Borough will recognize Juneteenth and continue to advocate for the creation of Juneteenth as a national holiday.

  • June 5th at 10:00 We will have an opening Ceremony for Reservoir Park.

  • June 5th at 12:00 We will have the flag raising ceremony of the  Pride Flag for LGBTQIA month.

  • June 19th at 1:00 We will have a flag raising ceremony for Juneteenth on Borough Greene and would like to invite residents to attend.

Finally, I hope everyone has an opportunity to celebrate the beautiful weather as we enter the summer months. I look forward to seeing all of the residents around the town in Lansdowne. Be well, be safe, and enjoy this wonderful town.

                                        Sincerely,

                                        Benjamin Hover

                               Council President
