Please keep recycling clean! J. P. Mascaro, Lansdowne's recycling contractor, has seen an increase in contaminated recycling at its single stream recycling plant.
The contamination rate at the J. P. Mascaro Total Recycle single stream recyclable materials processing facility has doubled over the past 12 months. This has created a twofold problem for us. One, instead of recycling materials, they are being forced to take the contaminated materials to their landfill to dispose of them, which is an additional expense, not to mention using up valuable landfill space. Secondly, many of these contaminants (non-recyclable materials} are causing costly breakdowns of our recycling lines, and, in some cases, even causing fires.
Below is a list of the most frequently received non-recyclable materials which should not be placed with recyclables for collection.
- Garden Hoses, Ropes, Chains, Extension Cords, Christmas Lights
- Automotive Parts - Brakes, Engine Components
- Wood, Trees
- Household Electronics & Appliances
