February 19, 2021 Letter from Council President Benjamin Hover

20210219_160532

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Although the cold, snow, and ice have made walking and driving around Lansdowne difficult, Lansdowne Borough Council and Mayor Campuzano want to thank our residents for being good neighbors and supporting each other by clearing the snow, running errands, and checking in on those who need an extra hand.

As mentioned in January, Lansdowne Borough Council and Mayor Campuzano maintain our optimism about the renaissance occurring in the Lansdowne Community. With the commencement of several building projects, housing development within the community, and the opening of new businesses in our Central Business District, Lansdowne is on the move.

Infrastructure:

Lansdowne Borough Council continues to work towards the upgrades of the Sanitary Sewer improvements throughout the Borough. The improvements are the result of a thorough inspection of the sanitary sewer system and the acquisition of approximately $990,000 of grant money to improve the infrastructure in Lansdowne.

Construction will begin in March on the Gateway Slope Project at the mouth of  Scottdale Road and Baltimore Avenue. The pathway will create a safer walkway up Baltimore Avenue and also create signage coming into Lansdowne Avenue.

Public Safety:

Lansdowne Borough Council and Mayor Campuzano are happy to report that Lansdowne Borough Council voted to procure Bodycams for the Lansdowne Police Department. The procurement for the department demonstrates the commitment of Borough Council and our Lansdowne Police Department towards providing the necessary tools for our officers to provide for the safety and protection of residents in Lansdowne.

In the past few weeks, several major crimes have been reported in the Greater Lansdowne community. When this happens, we need to remember that no community is immune to crime. In Lansdowne Borough, crime does not pay. Our Police Department has done an outstanding job bringing the perpetrators to justice.

New Police Chief

Lansdowne Borough Council and Mayor Campuzano are pleased to report that after a thorough Police Chief Search that Lansdowne Borough Council offered the position to our current Interim Police Chief Kenneth Rutherford. Read about Chief Rutherford Here

Lansdowne Borough Council voted to make the offer to Sgt. Kenneth Rutherford on January 27th. At the General Council Meeting on February 17th, Lansdowne Borough Council voted unanimously to approve the contract with Chief Rutherford. Please see the pictures of the Formal Swearing Ceremony held on February 19th.

Economic Development:

Lansdowne Borough Council continues to work with community partners and Lansdowne businesses to build the downtown in Lansdowne. Lansdowne Borough Council is committed to developing a marketing strategy to advertise the community and the many assets in the Borough and committed to supporting the development of businesses in the Borough of Lansdowne.

Lansdowne Borough Council voted unanimously to request an extension of the RACP grant for development of the Lansdowne Theater by the Historic Lansdowne Theater Corporation and also voted to support the Land Development plans for the Historic Lansdowne Theater Corporation.

Within the next month, Lansdowne Borough Council anticipates the proposed development of the Lansdowne Landing and Veteran’s Park areas to upgrade the parks as a community gathering space and upgrade the parking lots in Lansdowne Borough.

Cultural celebrations:

We are dedicated in Lansdowne to supporting all of our residents in Lansdowne and celebrating the cultures of Lansdowne. Please take a moment to support the celebration of Black History Month. And also keep your eyes open for the Borough’s recognition of Women’s History Month in March. And our celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and the contributions of Irish-Americans to the Greater Lansdowne community.

Please be safe as the Winter ends. If you can, please arrange to receive your COVID Vaccine as soon as possible. Until then, I hope to see you around town.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Hover
