Meet Interim Police Chief Sergeant Ken Rutherford

Me_11-16-20Interim Police Chief Ken Rutherford has been a part of the Lansdowne Police Department for 20 years now. While serving in the United States Marine Corps, he always enjoyed helping others which eventually drew him to the police force. After his Marine Corps career, Sgt. Rutherford began training to be a police officer. In December of 1999, he was hired by the Philadelphia Police Department and then in April of 2000 he switched to the Lansdowne Police Department.

Sergeant Rutherford served as a Patrol Officer/Officer in Charge from 2000-2007 and was promoted to Sergeant in 2007 and assigned to the Investigations Unit. He has spent the last 12 years assigned to the Delaware County Narcotics Task Force working Narcotics cases throughout Delaware County in an undercover capacity. Sgt. Rutherford has also handled various types of criminal cases within the Borough of Lansdowne, ranging from low level Thefts to Homicide.

Sgt. Rutherford has always wanted to help others, even as he was growing up and loves being able to do that in his current role. His favorite part of being a member of the Lansdowne Police Department is having the ability to interact with all different types of people. He enjoys getting to know the residents and talking to people from all walks of life who have made Lansdowne their home.

One of his main goals as interim Police Chief is to get more involved in the community. “We seem to have gotten away from getting to know the residents and it is more about paperwork. My goal is to get myself and all of the officers to get to know all of the residents through all different kinds of policing.”

In his current role of interim Police Chief, Sergeant Rutherford hopes to forge a real connection with the community of Lansdowne. Sergeant Rutherford currently lives in Secane with his wife of 20 years and his two children.
