IAIDO
What is the martial art of Iaido? It has been said for many centuries that the Samurai’s sword is his soul. Iaido is the art of self discipline and control through the skilled use of the katana. Iaido practice is often called “moving Zen.”
Through the process of training in Iaido, the student learns that the mind, body, and soul of the practitioner come together as one; and, the purity of the soul of the student is allowed to flourish. Just as the sword-smith, polisher, and warrior bring the katana to life, the art of Iaido, forges, polishes, and brings the very best attributes and qualities of the student into focus and helps make you the very best person you can become.
What do you need to get started? Bokan (wooden sword) and knee pads. Jules Shuzen Harris holds an Ed.D. with a concentration in applied human development. As a psychotherapist, Shuzen has found creative ways to synthesize Western psychology and Zen to achieve dramatic results with his patients and students. He also focuses on the relationship between Zen and the martial arts. He is a fourthdegree Black Belt in Iaido (the art of drawing and cutting with a samurai sword) and a Black Belt in Kendo (Japanese fencing). He has founded two schools of Japanese swordsmanship in Albany, NY and Salt Lake City, UT.
When: Saturdays, 9:00 am-10:00 am; Ten weeks, April 20-June 22
Fee: $110; Non-resident $120
