Meeting Minutes

October 8, 2008

Attendees: Sharon Coleman, Barbara Silzle, Jayne Young, Dan Kortan

Absent: Joe Urban, Tom Young

Visitors – There we no visitor’s comments.

Emergency Response – The committee discussed the process by which we should make updates to the Emergency Response Plan. In preparation for a review of the plan, committee members should complete, at a minimum, the first in a series of courses on Emergency Response prior to our November 12th meeting. (Please reference Dan’s 10/9 emails) In addition, edits that have been made by the previous committee members along with what is in progress from the staff will be gathered for committee review.

South Lansdowne Avenue Speeding Issue – The committee discussed additional ways to control the speeding situation on South Lansdowne Avenue. To date, the police department has stepped up enforcement during various times which has yielded the issuance of citations. After much discussion, the committee decided to try to calm the situation by ordering pedestrian friendly “lime green” signage that will serve to illuminate the area catching the eye of the drivers.

Police Hiring Process – The committee discussed standardizing the process by which we hire police officers. It was decided, to maintain consistency, in addition to the local News papers, we will continue to place ads in the Philadelphia Tribune and Philadelphia Daily News. Also, residents will continue to participate in the oral portion of the examination.

Comprehensive Crime Prevention Plan – The committee continued discussion on whether we should move forward with the consultant and our approach for the development of the comprehensive crime prevention plan. It was determined that we would like to use the consultant for the development, distribution and analysis of a resident survey. Once completed, the results will be incorporated into the plan which will be authored by the committee and the two representatives from the Lansdowne Police Department.
