Environmental Committee Minutes

November 22, 2010

Present: Barbara Silzle, Chair; Ellen Lustgarten; Michael Schleigh; and Michael Jozwiak, Codes Dept.    

  • Apt Recycling Enforcement
    • Michael Jozwiak will provide a report to track compliance on an ongoing basis.  
  • Public Comment – none
  • 2011 Trash-Recycling Program Education
    • Barbara will prepare a 2011 Environmental Services one-pg handout to be available to the public throughout the year. 
    • Info will be in the next Borough Newsletter
    • Barbara wrote a detailed article that was in the Lansdowne Leader and distributed to all households describing why and how the changes were made, and what the changes were.  Many responses received from residents have all been quite positive.
    • Magnets will be distributed by Public Works before year end 
  • Expanded Plastics Education
    • The borough has been informed that Blue Mountain now accepts, in addition to #1 and #2s, #4, #5, and #7s, but containers only – no bags.
    • The borough is waiting for a list of Do’s and Don’ts from Blue Mountain to make available on the borough website and to the public throughout the year.  
  • Marlyn Park Master Site Plan Update 
    • Sewer project ready to get underway
    • Replacement wall will be done later; engineer involved.
    • Erica Sollberger, Director of Parks & Recreation, will head up the plan implementation, including the issue of encroachments.
  • ICLEI update
    • Craig Totaro, Borough Manager, will have the intern complete the data input, which will then be migrated to the Manager’s borough computer.
  • Downtown trash/recycling cans
    • The committee identified the matching trash and recycling cans the borough will place along the Lansdowne Avenue corridor and at Borough Green; 5 matching sets are needed.  The cans they replace will be distributed to other downtown and business districts.  
    • Barbara will work with Betsy Riffert to purchase what we can with the $1100 remaining in the 2010 budget line; the remainder to be purchased in 2011, after the budget is finalized.  
  • Keep Lansdowne Beautiful Day 2011 
    • The committee decided to do the clean-up again after the successful 2010 event.  The date is to be determined; it will be held in conjunction with Earth Day (4/22), before the Town-wide Yard Sale & Farmer’s Market gets started, and coordinated with the Darby Creek Cleanup Day and Easter.
  • Board Updates
    • Rec & Park Board
      • At least 1 opening 1/1/11; 3 others terms expire 12/31/10
    • Tree Advisory Board
      • Baltimore Ave tree planting went well; may be a Spring planting for other business district/s.
  • Next Meeting
    • The December 9th meeting will be cancelled.  The next meeting will be Thursday, January 13th, 2011 at 7pm.
